The statistical gap between men’s and women’s chemical use is closing; however, not all things are equal. Women have an enhanced biological vulnerability to developing substance use disorders. They present to treatment in less time after initiating use with more severe and advanced physical consequences. Despite these facts, current admission rates show that one women enters chemical dependency treatment for every two men. In this presentation, we will explore the reasons behind these issues and discuss treatment specific approaches to help enhance services for this population.
